Quick Tip: Use Name/URL When Commenting

One of the best ways to increase your page rank, which in turn increases your search standing, is increasing the number of links back to your blog. The best way to easily do that is by commenting on other blogs.

But, Blogger makes that a little difficult to do. The default templates are "nofollow" and if you leave a comment, the default is a link back to your profile instead of your blog.

I followed Blogger Buster's tutorial on getting rid of the "nofollow" parts of the templates on both of my blogs to allow 'linklove' for everyone that chooses to comment. It's easy to do.

How to do it. When you leave a comment on my blogs and any other Blogger blog, choose the "Name/URL" option instead of accepting the default Google ID. The name you leave will be what shows up as the linked text. The URL you leave is the address to your blog, and it needs to be a complete URL. You have to include the "http://" part of it. For instance, this blog's complete address/URL is http://bumpypath.blogspot.com, and that is what I enter whenever I leave comments on other blogs.

The other thing I've done is add a Top Commenters widget. The most frequent commenters during the last 30 days will show on the list and it also includes a link back to the address you used to sign your comments. If you use the default Google ID, it will only link back to your profile and not your blog.

So, go ahead and take advantage of all the linklove/backlink opportunities and use the Name/URL option when leaving comments on Blogger blogs!

Hope this helps.

  1. Oh, this is wonderful information to know. I must share this with my readers in my "Things I Learned This Week" Friday post on my blog at www.zemeks.blogspot.com with a link to this post if it's okay with you.

  3. Hi Theresa,

I have done the same, however I do moderate comments, it keeps the spammers away!
I don't know why Blogger is no follow by default, perhaps its their way of dealing with spam comments?
I think people appreciate top commenter's widgets as well as it at least rewards folks who take the time to read a post!

  5. Mike, I've never had any spammers! Knock on wood. The nofollow part is an effort to limit the paths the bots have to take and report back. But the people at Blogger know that most of us get rid of that nofollow ASAP. Now, there are times when you wouldn't want a specific link free, like with affiliate advertising, and it's easy to put in with rel="nofollow" within the URL.

Ruth, welcome! Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

  6. I use Wordpress. I wondered why, when I commented on some Blogger sites, the Name/URL option was not available. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'm guessing that most people don't know about changing the default setting. I only comment on a post if I feel that I have something relevant to say. I never comment just to "put my name out there." I get the occasional spammer, but I approve all comments and they are easy to spot, at least for now.

  7. If the Name/URL option isn't available, then the blog owner didn't set the comments to "Anyone can comment." The only way to take out the "nofollow" part of the template is to edit the HTML/XML directly.

I'm the same as you, only commenting when there's something to say. But when I do, it helps to make them link back to my own blog. Leaving good comments like yours, John, is a draw to your blog as well. I know I read you daily!

  8. That's the general thing for an well-worse blogger, but not the new ones could know about that. This is the great method which made the Alexa ranking of my site blown off just within one week to the amount of 24lakhs currently...
